Afternoons at Nordlicht

The display case fills up every morning

What's on the counter from 8:30 am is made in our own on-site patisserie. Until 6:00 pm you can get cake and gateaux by the slice – while the day's supply lasts.

Discover our cakes
  1. 1

    From 5:00 am — Patisserie

In the bakehouse, the day begins with the yeast doughs and the sponge bases for the cakes. Buttercream and cream fillings are whipped fresh, and fruit is cut. What lies in the display case today is made this very morning.

  2. 2

    8:30 am — Doors open

Tuesday to Friday we open at 8:30 am. The first hour is the quietest of the day: good for a relaxed breakfast, reading the paper, or a conversation where you want to understand each other.

  3. 3

    9:30 to 11:30 am — Breakfast time

The main breakfast period. On weekdays we take breakfast orders until 11:30 am, on weekends until 1:00 pm. Anyone arriving later gets the cake menu — and a filled roll on request.

  4. 4

From 11:30 am — Switch to cake

The kitchen switches over: scrambled eggs and egg timers make way for cake servers and cake forks. The display case has been full since opening, and the selection of cakes and tarts stays large into the early afternoon.

  5. 5

    2:00 to 4:30 pm — Coffee time

The busiest time of day, especially on weekends and in rainy weather. If you're coming as a group or want a particular table, it's best to reserve in advance for these hours.

  6. 6

    5:30 pm — Last call

Half an hour before closing, we take the last orders. We close at 6:00 pm — of course, you can finish your drink in peace. We're happy to pack up any remaining pieces of cake to take away.

Best time

Which time suits your visit

A café visit with a pram calls for different hours than a gathering of eight. The tabs below show which time windows have worked well for which occasions — based on our staff's experience, not theory.

Tuesday to Friday between 8:30 and 9:30 am, most tables are free and the kitchen has room for special requests — eggs cooked to your liking, bread swapped for rolls, side dishes served separately. On Saturdays and Sundays, the room fills up noticeably from around 10:00 am. If you want to have breakfast on the weekend without waiting, it's best to come right at opening or reserve a table.
Why are you closed on Mondays?
Monday is our day of rest. It's not a day off without reason: it's when the bakery and dining area get a thorough cleaning, equipment is serviced, supplies are ordered, and the coming week's cakes are planned. Without this day, the freshness on the other six wouldn't be possible. If a public holiday falls on a Monday, we stick to our schedule — we then open as usual on Tuesday at 8:30 am.
What about public holidays?
On statutory public holidays in Schleswig-Holstein, our Sunday hours generally apply, meaning 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, with breakfast until 1:00 pm. We deviate from this on Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, and the Christmas holidays. The exact times will be posted on the door in good time and listed on this page — when in doubt, please don't rely on the weekly schedule, but give us a quick call to check.
Do you close for annual holidays?
Yes, we close once a year for a few days so the team and the patisserie can take a breather. We announce the dates several weeks in advance — on this page, in the café, and in person to all customers with an open cake order. If an order would fall within the closure period, we'll discuss it with you beforehand and arrange a date before or after.
How long can we stay seated?
We won't put a clock in front of you. We take the last order at 5:30 pm, after which we no longer serve new guests — but your coffee and cake are welcome to finish at their own pace. Anyone wanting something at 5:45 pm is welcome to have it packed to take away.
Is breakfast time strictly enforced?
The cutoff is 11:30 am on weekdays and 1:00 pm on weekends, and it has a practical reason: afterwards, the kitchen clears the breakfast station and prepares the cake counter for the afternoon. If you arrive shortly before the cutoff and are already seated, we'll of course still take your order. Later on, filled rolls and individual sides remain available, but a full breakfast no longer does.
Are you staffed differently in bad weather?
The hours stay the same, but the occupancy doesn't: on rainy days, the dining room is noticeably fuller from early afternoon onward, since the terrace isn't available. In that case, expect short waits for a table, or reserve in advance. In warm weather, we use the outdoor seating for as long as the sun allows.
